PSHE
At Wareham St Mary Primary School, we teach PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) through a programme called SCARF. SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship.
SCARF is a whole school approach which enables us to build on these essential foundations for our children from the Early years all the way through to year 6. We fundamentally believe that these foundations are crucial for children to achieve their best both academically and socially.
SCARF is a rigorous programme that not only incorporates the PSHE and RSHE curriculum, but also focuses on children’s mental health and well-being.
PSHE is taught weekly but not exclusively through the SCARF curriculum. We adapt our curriculum to the needs of the children and any issues that require addressing on a daily basis. It is delivered through circle times, drama, stories, and group discussions as well as through assemblies. Visits and visitors to the school further support the teaching of PSHE including the SCARF Life Bus mobile classroom which delivers memorable life skill lessons through interactive workshops.
Our school values are interwoven with the PSHE lessons and provide a consistent language throughout the school.
Through our PSHE and RHSE curriculum, we aim to provide children with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live a healthy, safe and balanced life which will support them beyond their time at our school.

Our SCARF curriculum provides a detailed framework for developing a positive ethos across the school community which contributes significantly to our British Values education. The five themes of British Values are:
By using SCARF, we are ensuring these themes are taught, both explicitly and implicitly, in an age-appropriate way, across all year groups. We will be enabling children to develop responsibility for their own actions; respect for the actions and beliefs of others; understand how each individual is protected by the rule of law; and how everyone can make a positive contribution to society through the democratic process.
