Autumn 1
What happens to our waste food?
Today (21st October), we have had a visit from Kristen and Bonster Monster, from Dorset Council, to teach us about what happens to our waste food, what we should be to reduce food waste and how our food can be turned into electricity. We where introduce to the food waste song, teaching us how our food is sent to an Anaerobic Digestion Plant, where the waste food is allow to rot and those gases become electricity by turning turbines and the mulch is sent to farms as a soil enhancer. We also looked at how much energy and water is used in growing and this is wasted if we don't eat the food we have in time. Thank you Kristen and the Bonster Monster.
Dog's Trust Visit
This week, Vicky from Dog's Trust came to give us a talk about how to read dog behaviours to ensure that we have a respectful and happy relationship with the dogs in our lives. We explored this topic through drama, dance and play. We ended the session by making promises of how we were going to take what we learnt today into our daily lives. Thank you for the fantastic workshop Vicky.
What is the best Insulator?
During our Materials Science Unit this year we have been learning about conductors (materials that let energy move through them easily) and insulators (materials that don't let energy move through them easily). This week we have been experimenting about which are the best - or worse- thermal insulators by test which allows ices to stay frozen after 30 minutes.
We tested bubble wrap, tin-foil and paper to see which keeps the ice frozen the longest. We first had to weigh the ice to see what the mass was to start off with; We then wrapped the ice in the different materials and left them for 30 minutes and reweighed them to see which has lost the most mass.
There was a variety of results but the best thermal insulator overall for the class was the bubble wrap, whereas paper was the best thermal conductor.
Visit from Father Tim
Last week we were lucky to have a visit from Canon Tim who came to speak to us about prison chaplaincy and how the Gospels can teach us how to forgive. Both Year 5 and 6 came together to listen to the services he provides for the prisons, from being a listening ear, delivering bad news or helping to look for forgiveness through the life of Jesus. The children had some fantastic questions e.g.
'I would find it hard to forgive them, what would Jesus do?'
'Can you looking for forgiveness for yourself?'
'Can you look for forgiveness in the afterlife?'
We really challenged Father Tim and he provided us with a fantastic perspective from the Catholic Church.
Thank you Father Tim.
Nothe Fort WW2 Evacuee Experience
On Wednesday, we travelled back in time and arrived in Nothe Fort in the late 1930's. We were greeted by Mr Hopkins, the Air Raid Warden of Nothe Fort, who ran us through what a evacuee would have to take with them, what we would have left and what we would be going too. We then separated into three groups: One group went to the Laundry and Kitchen with Mrs Mop, where we learned that we were the washing machine!! We also learned about make do and mend, cooking on rations and what life was like for children who had left home. Another group went to meet Mr Arkwright in the shop, where we learned about rationing, what was available and how the British fell in love with queueing. Can you believe you'd only get 1 egg, A WEEK!! The other group then went with Mr Hopkins and we learning (and survived) an air raid in an actual Anderson Shelter, while singing 'She'll be coming round the Mountains'. After all this we swapped round.
It was a fantastic day and Dragonfly class showed how amazing they are with their brilliant manners, behaviour and knowledge.
SCARF Visit
On Tuesday we had a visitor in from SCARF, the provider of our PSHE Curriculum. We learned all about how our brains respond to stress, we thought about how we might behave if we were experiencing this and then looked at how to reduce this stress. We received great tips on breathing exercises, active relievers and talking to others.
Making Gas Mas Cases.
To prepare for our trip to Nothe Fort on Wednesday we made Gas Mask cases to add to our costume. As an additional DT project, we refreshed our knowledge on adhesives, nets and collecting the correct tools to complete the job. They look great and ready for our trip back in time.
Week 1:
We have had a fantastic first few days back at school. As a class we have agreed our expectations for the year, learned our class routines and worked together to have the best start of the year possible. A highlight was our PE lesson where we worked together to solve problems as a team and work on our communication. Well done Dragonfly Class!
