Autumn 2
Advent
This week we have started to think about and celebrate advent in school. As part of this we have a Science experiment Advent Calendar. One child a day will be given a fun, exciting experiment to do at home. Please find below the instructions for all of the experiments. Happy Investigating!!
MicroBit Sensors Lesson
This week in computing we have been learning about input and output systems in our everday life. We have focused on Amazon and how from our home computer, to the factory, to the delivery vans, to the lock boxes; if the computer inputs and sensors are inputted incorrectly we can have a break in the system and it can go wrong. We put this idea into practise by programming the BBC MicroBits to act as dice that we can use, we had to code the numbers, choosing a random number when we shake it and starting again. We had to debug the program a couple of times, but in the end we all had successful dice.
Eurgh Science Experiment - Milk Plastic
This week we have been learning about irreversible changes in Science. Mr McKaigg explained to us about making plastic from milk. We learned out the protein Caisin, which can be released using vinegar. He showed us that mixing warm milk and vinegar releases this protein, we then collected the harder bit, squeezed out the remaining fluid and then formed it into shapes. The classroom smelt like a really bad fish and chip shop!!
Science - Seperating Materials
This week we have been looking at seperating materials that can be seperated. We completed 3 different experiements:
- Sieving flour with raisins in it.
- Using a magnet to remove paperclips from rice.
- Filtering water from a sand mixture.
We also set up a long term experiment, where we dissolved salt in water and left it to see if salt crystals will form again. We wonder how long we'll have to wait?
Science - Testing Electrical Conductors and Insulators.
This week in Science, we have been looking at Electrical Insulators and Conductors. We were testing materials like, paper, paperclips (metal), glasses and lollypop sticks (wood), seeing which allow our electrical circuits to light the lightbulb or which prevented it. Please ask us about our electrifying results!!
