Y6 LOVE going shopping, so when they were told they were walking into Wareham to look for Fairtrade products, they were very excited. They ventured into Sainsburys and Co-Op to explore what Fairtrade products they had to offer. The children were all very impressed with the range of Fairtrade products available to people living in Wareham.
Y6 have loved making their marble runs. From planning and designing them to the actual making, everyone was fully engaged and had a great time. The best bit was trying them out - and they've now been donated to OPAL for everyone to enjoy.
Today, the Y6 children enjoyed an afternoon finding out even more about Fairtrade. Thanks to Heather, our local Fairtrade expert, the children learnt so much about different products which contain the Fairtrade logo for their help in supporting farmers in countries less fortunate than our own. Coffee, bananas, rubber gloves and chocolate to name a few. The children watched a short film, completed some group activities and had the opportunity to design their own chocolate bar wrapper. Thank you Heather for giving up your time to come and work with us.
Y6 are LOVING their new writing stimulus - Francis. They are very keen to begin writing their own versions of the story. Francis is a suspense story so we began by watching the short clip with the lights off to really embrace the themes in the film. The children enjoyed the film and were left with lots of questions about what happened to Francis. We will be looking at descriptions of the setting, character feelings and how we can combine all our ideas into a longer piece of narrative writing...watch this space!
Science this half term is all about classification. We have had great fun in class classifying sweets today - we found it very hard not to eat them!! Take a look at how we tried to classify them and create our very own classification keys.
Y6 trip to Winchester Science Centre. Today Y6 had the 'Best trip ever!' (words of 2 children on their way home!) at the Winchester Science Centre. They explored the exhibits and had a hands-on go at trying out the different experiments then took part in a session finding out about their lung capacity by using the peak flow test and were also able to investigate (by poking and prodding) the different parts of a lambs heart. the children were also able to enjoy a session in the planetarium, revising their knowledge of Space. All-in-all, everyone had a brilliant day and learnt lots about everything science.
Art Day. The children spent the day studying the work of Klari Reis, an artist who became fascinated with what germs and bacteria looked like underneath a microscope. She created many pieces of art work depicting this wonderful and intriguing scientific phenomena. The children began by analysing Klari Reis' work, stating what they liked or disliked about it. Then they had a go at experimenting with a different hue and changing the shade by adding a light or dark pigment. Finally they designed their own petri dish full of bacteria ready to paint next week. They had a great day and used some wonderful art skills.
Science in Y6. We are having a great time in Science this half term. Out topic, The Circulatory System, is certainly making everyone think about how blood flows around our bodies. This week we planned an experiment to see how exercise affects our heart rate. We had great fun taking part in different exercises then taking our pulse rates (once we had found them). Next week we will create a graph with our results and write a conclusion to see if our hypothesis was correct.
Today we made blood! We spent our science lesson learning about the components of blood and finding out what each component does. We watched a short film, acted out being red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, discussed what the different components do and then described them on our sheets. We learnt that plasma is a straw-coloured liquid which contains all the cells, white blood cells fight infections, red blood cells carry oxygen around the body and platelets clot the blood and stop us bleeding. We had great fun learning and might even try to recreate making the blood at home!
Today was Spiders class first day....everyone has a great time getting to know their new class and new routines. The children enjoyed finding out about what topics they will be covering, what lessons they will have and most importantly, what trips they will be going on. They completed some lovely art work based on their ambitions, some beautiful poetry work about friends and also shared how they were feeling about the coming year. Well done Y6 - a fantastic start! :)
